The Web-Friendly Images feature collects images from your QuarkXPress project to a sub-folder of the path you saved your XML to, in a format suitable for onscreen viewing. Images will be saved at 72 ppi/dpi (unless overridden using Atomik Tools), in the RGB colourmodel, to JPEG format, in preparation for viewing in a browser, and the path to the image in your XML (given in the imgPath attribute of your designated image element) will link to the new web-friendly image rather than the original image referenced in you QuarkXPress project.
The new resolution will match the resolution of monitors, which are typically 72 ppi/dpi, and ensure the artwork can be speedily displayed on a webpage. For more information on this feature, see Chapter 8, Extracting Images. If left unchecked, the attributes of the Image element will simply refer to the original image file.
To enable this feature, check the checkbox and provide a name for the subfolder to collect the images in. If this folder does not already exist it will be created on exporting your XML.
The default ppi/dpi can be changed using the Atomik Tools tab of the Measurements palette. The right-hand drop-down list includes a menu item “Set Document Default PPI...”, which brings up a dialog where the default can be changed between: 72 ppi, 96 ppi, 150ppi or 300ppi.
Finally, by checking the ‘Constrain Image Dimensions’ checkbox, it is possible to set maximum width and height for the web-friendly images in pixels. Any images that exceed these dimensions will be rescaled, while retaining their original aspect ratio.
