13.5 Manually associating images and text

As described in Chapter 5 - Working with Rulesets, Atomik Xport uses your Box Ordering Preferences to work through your layout extracting text and images from the boxes it encounters. In many designs, boxes containing captions or picture credits may appear right, left, above or below the images they refer to, or indeed on the opposite end of a double-page spread. This presents a problem, because we have retained the association between image and text in our DTD, yet their arrangement on the page is too diverse and inconsistent for the association to be retained in the extraction.

In addition, a single caption or picture credit may apply to several images, and in these cases we may wish to duplicate this text in our XML for each image.

To address these problems, Atomik Tools offers the ability to specify the caption and copyright text for each image in your layout, as an alternative to relying on box-ordering preferences and style-mappings.

Associating a caption with an image

You can associate a caption with its image by multi-selecting their boxes and clicking ‘Associate Caption Box with Image’ in the Atomik Tools palette:

1. Select the image box using QuarkXPress’s Selection Tool.

2. Open the Atomik Tools palette if neccessary by choosing Window>Measurements and choose the Atomik Tools tab.

3. Shift+Click the box containing the caption.

You should now have both the image and caption boxes selected.

4. On the Atomik Tools tab of the Measurements palette, click the button for ‘Associate Caption Box with Image’.

Note: hovering over the buttons in the Atomik Tools palette reveals their function in a tool tip.

You have now associated the caption with its image, and provided you have followed our DTD guidelines earlier in this chapter, you should find that they extract as sibling elements irrespective of your ruleset’s box-ordering preferences or style mappings.

Associating copyright information with an image

You can associate copyright information (e.g. a picture credit) with an image by multi-selecting their boxes and clicking ‘Associate Copyright Box with Image’ in the Atomik Tools palette:

1. Select the image box using QuarkXPress’s Selection Tool.

2. Open the Atomik Tools palette if neccessary by choosing Window>Measurements and choose the Atomik Tools tab.

3. Shift+Click the box containing the copyright information.

You should now have both the image and copyright boxes selected.

4. On the Atomik Tools tab of the Measurements palette, click the icon for ‘Associate Copyright Box with Image’.

Note: hovering over the buttons in the Atomik Tools palette reveals their function in a tool tip.

You have now associated the copyright information with its image, and provided you have followed our DTD guidelines earlier in this chapter, you should find that they extract as sibling elements irrespective of your ruleset’s box-ordering preferences or style-mappings.
