Atomik Roundtrip 2.1: Working with Roundtrip <<

Chapter 22 Glossary

Atomik Roundtrip – Atomik Roundtrip is XTensions software for QuarkXPress that provides full, bi-directional XML support for QuarkXPress.

Atomik Xport – Atomik Xport is market leading XTensions software for QuarkXPress that exports from QuarkXPress to valid XML.

Document Type Definition (DTD) – A Document Type Definition (DTD) is a definition of the structure of an XML document.

DTD – see Document Type Definition.

Metadata – The literal definition of Metadata is "data about data". It enhances the core data by providing further information about it. For example your data might actually be a picture. The picture itself is the core data but you might also store additional information with the picture such as the photographer's name, what company holds the copyright, what format it is in etc. This additional information is known as metadata.

XML – XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a markup language that enables you to label your content in such a way that anyone can use it. XML is similar to HTML which itself is used for most of today’s Web pages. However while HTML is concerned with describing how content will be displayed and interacted with, XML describes what the data actually is. The power and flexibility of XML means that it is fast becoming the standard holding and exchanging content.

XSL – XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language) is a language for adding visual styles to XML content, and also for converting XML documents to different document structures. Atomik Enhancer (supplied with Atomik Xport SE software) uses XSL style sheets to convert from one DTD to another and to enable content to be enhanced with metadata.
