Overview Atomik Import is the new QuarkXPress XTension that enables QuarkXPress users to create print document from XML content. This means that QuarkXPress customers can continue to enjoy the familiarity and print precision of QuarkXPress whenever they need to include XML content in their print workflow. It shares a similar user interface with Atomik Roundtrip, but does not permit the re-exporting of XML.
What it does The design objective for Atomik Import is to create print documents from XML content. It can import multiple XML files from different sources simultaneously, and it can automatcially populate multiple QuarkXPress pages with XML content. It is compatible with all XML document types, and requires no additional scripting or XML transformations. Images referenced in the XML are also imported. Once the document is populated wth text and images it can be printed using the powerful and familiar print facilities of QuarkXPress.
Why XML? XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a markup language that enables you to label content in such a way that anyone can use it. XML offers numerous benefits, most notably that it is media-independent, flexible and an open standard. Media-independence means being able to easily publish content to multiple media. XML has been long acknowledged as the ideal format to achieve this as it enables the content to be stored independently of its layout.
The flexibility of XML means that as long as a publication has some structure to it such as in a magazine, book or newspaper, you are able to store it in XML. Even if a publication has no structure at all, it can still be stored in XML, it’s just that its usefulness is diminished. XML is also an open standard. It is not owned or controlled by any single corporation but by an independent standards body, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This means your content should never again be trapped in a proprietary file format.
What can you do with XML? XML is now supported by thousands of applications including the latest versions of the leading Web browsers and the majority of database applications and content management and asset management systems. This means once your content is in XML it can pretty much travel anywhere.
Who is Atomik Import for? Atomik Import can be used by printers, publishers, design agencies, catalogue producers, and product literature producers for whom XML content is mainstream technology, but who do not require the full set of features offered by Atomik Roundtrip. It will have particular relevance to companies who recieve a number of XML files from different sources for printing, but who do not require to maintain a definitive version of such files within a content management system.
