What versions of QuarkXPress does Atomik Roundtrip work with?
Atomik Roundtrip is compatible with both QuarkXPress 6.5 and 7.3.

Does it work for Windows and Macintosh?
Yes, Atomik Roundtrip is available on both the Windows and Macintosh platforms.

Can Atomik Roundtrip handle images?
Atomik Roundtrip can import both text and images into QuarkXPress so long as the relevant pointers to the image files are contained in your XML Document(s). You can of course continue to place images in QuarkXPress in the usual way as well.

Can I update my XML files from the QuarkXPress document?
Yes. Atomik Roundtrip maintains a link between the content in your QuarkXPress document and the source XML document. This means that if you make any copyedits or corrections to the content in QuarkXPress, with just one click you can update the source XML document(s) to reflect these changes.

Can I export XML from QuarkXPress with Atomik Roundtrip?
Yes. However for content to be exported from QuarkXPress using Atomik Roundtrip, the content you want to extract must have been brought into QuarkXPress from an XML document in the first place. If you have QuarkXPress documents that you wish to convert into XML but you have not used Atomik Roundtrip to build them, you should take a look at Atomik Xport for automated QuarkXPress-to-XML conversion.

How does Atomik Roundtrip handle special font sets such as Wingdings?
XML documents do not generally contain font information, as XML documents are concerned with describing content structure rather than presentation or styling. By setting up templates or Atomik Roundtrip rulesets for your XML Elements, the XML content will assume the chosen font as it is imported into QuarkXPress. Similarly, exporting XML from QuarkXPress only exports the content, not the styling information. This means that any characters from special font sets such as Wingdings or Zapfdingbats will be exported as standard characters that relate to their position in the character map. Atomik Roundtrip supports all characters within the UTF-8 character set.

Does Atomik work with all languages?
Atomik works with QuarkXPress International English, US English and all standard languages supported in QuarkXPress Passport.

Does XML integrate with existing systems?
XML is a widely adopted open industry standard. This means that integration with third party systems for cross-media publishing, workflow, database and content management is readily available due to this support for XML. Atomik Roundtrip can take XML from your file system and bring it directly into QuarkXPress.

Do I need to understand XML to use Atomik Roundtrip?
No. Atomik Roundtrip has been developed with non-technical users in mind. Designers don’t have to understand the technical complexities of XML in order to be able to use Atomik Roundtrip. Users simply point Atomik Roundtrip to the XML document(s) that they wish to use or have been provided to them, and the XML is imported into QuarkXPress. Once in QuarkXPress, moving the content onto the page is a simple drag and drop process.

Do I need a content management system to use Atomik Roundtrip?
No. There are obviously benefits to storing your XML in a managed environment that is handling important issues such as version control and multi-user access, but this is not a requirement. Atomik Roundtrip works with files on your local file system (unless you have a special integrated version such as with Documentum). Therefore all you need is to be able to access XML files. You might be interested to know that applications such as FileMaker Pro, MS SQL, MS Excel and many others, all have XML export capabilities.

Do I need special XML to use with Roundtrip?
No. You can use any XML with Atomik Roundtrip. However if you want to utilise the bi-directional functionality in Atomik Roundtrip i.e. updating your QuarkXPress document or your XML document when content changes, Atomik Roundtrip will need to include some additional referencing information in your XML file. You have control in the Atomik Roundtrip preferences to specify whether this referencing information should be appended to the XML document(s) using attributes or through commented out text in the XML. If you decide to choose the attribute option, your DTD/Schema will need to allow these new attributes. However if you select to use the commenting option, no DTD/Schema changes will be needed. Users have the option to select whichever method fits best in their established workflow and systems.

Can I use my existing company DTD or Schema?
Yes. Atomik Roundtrip does not require the use of a special DTD in order to be able to import the XML into QuarkXPress. Therefore you can use any XML created with your existing company DTD or Schema

What’s the difference between Atomik Roundtrip and Atomik Xport?
Atomik Xport automates the extraction of completed QuarkXPress print documents into XML. Atomik Roundtrip imports XML into QuarkXPress and can also re-export any changes to the imported XML content, thereby ‘roundtripping’ the XML. Atomik Roundtrip does not export XML from legacy QuarkXPress documents. The two products therefore address different workflow requirements but can be used independently or in combination as customers require.

Can Atomik Roundtrip handle more complex XML structures
Yes. Atomik Roundtrip can work with complex XML structures based on both DTDs and Schemas.

Can Atomik Roundtrip handle Well-Formed XML?
Yes. Atomik can handle both well-formed and valid XML. When you import the XML with Roundtrip, the error log will notify you of any issues relating to validity in the XML.

What if the structure of my QuarkXPress document changes?
The structure of your QuarkXPress document is not directly relevant to Atomik Roundtrip as it takes its structure from the imported XML. Therefore as long as the content you require is in your XML document, a change in the QuarkXPress document structure should not effect Atomik Roundtrip.

Can you use any DTD or Schema?
Atomik works with almost all DTDs and Schemas that conform to the XML standards defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). If your DTD or Schema uses external entity references, you will need to make sure these are available to Atomik Roundtrip as it is not possible for QuarkXPress to access these across the Web. Entity locations and other parameters can be defined in the Atomik Roundtrip preferences.
